People with diabetes in Barnsley are 32% less likely to require a major amputation than patients anywhere else in the country, thanks to improvements made by specialist teams.

A review highlighted that over the last three years, podiatry (foot health) care in Barnsley provided by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Barnsley Hospital, had successfully reduced the length of time a patient needed to stay in hospital due to diabetic foot conditions and also reduced the number of major amputations required. Diabetes can commonly cause people to experience a lack of sensation in their feet which can lead to the development of wounds on the foot; often complicated by infection and poor circulation.

South Yorkshire Police say a 63-year-old man is due to appear at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court this morning, Tuesday 4 October, having been charged with her murder.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with the offence of assisting offenders in connection with the murder of Joy Billam. He will also be appearing at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court today.

Forty-six-year-old Joy’s body was found in the boot of her purple Ford Fiesta Fusion, which was parked on Doncaster Road, near to the junction with the A635 at around midday on Saturday 1 October.

Post mortem results revealed that Joy had died from strangulation.
